![]() I had tried numerous solutions offered to get the microsoft firewall running after uninstalling norton 360 completely that I found online but none worked so I bit the bullet and did the in place windows 10 upgrade. The windows defender firewall service would not start and in services.msc would show starting and stopping and would not show running while the base filtering engine was running which led me to believe norton was not the cause of the problem (and since others were not reporting it in mass). ![]() Also it would be helpful to allow saving all your settings including the firewall program settings especially and able to restore, as well as being able to select several at a time to add to the firewall programs list then bring them up one at a time to decide what to do (allow, block etc) For some reason the intrusion prevention however seems to turn off upon the patch but if you continue to liveupdate, reboot and turn it back on it will remain on after that so it still should be looked at to see that any services are not turned off after updates which would cause problems for the less experienced. The norton firewall now works on install, works ok on a patch program update, and works ok after a reboot. There is also the iso on should you be unable to download it from microsoft for some reason (which uses your existing key) but you can find the key also if needed You can also choose upgrade this pc now and dont have to create media or an iso and burn it or mount it. In order to repair the problem I did an in-place windows 10 upgrade which can keep all your existing programs and files intact but restore the windows 10 files so I also did not have to reinstall all my programs, although they recommend to uninstall norton 360 prior to the upgrade and reinstall it once upgrade is complete. Several posts have essentially said the same problem but this is a bit more information from the troubleshooting to help figure out the cause. Windows Fast Startup feature is also not enabled and did not seem to be the cause of the problems. I do not know how long before it forces the delayed program patch update which then would require running NRnR again. It also appears unfortunately to disable upon reboot of system even without applying the liveupdate patch.Īs a temporary solution, using NRnR tool even with just remove & reinstall restores the full functionality of the firewall so it can be used normally for as long as I neither reboot or apply patch for program update so there appears to be a potential bug in the update, it did not require using advanced option to purge registry and then reinstall although I've tried that also but experience the same issues. A pop-up also then informs me that the Smart Firewall had been turned off, I click the "Fix" button, but the firewall does not turn on. Once the program update patch happens I can still turn the firewall settings on that were turned off in settings but they do not remain on once the settings panel is closed as if the settings change does not stick and seems to eventually grey out the settings. After a bit of troubleshooting it seems to happen immediately after a liveupdate applying the patch for program update, however it does not disable when it applies the protection updates from the liveupdate only and I click apply later to the program update patch. Norton 360 firewall turns off and stays disabled or greys out.
